Despite the fact that automotive safety has improved dramatically over the past two decades, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that the last five years have seen a higher rate of accidents and fatalities than the 12 years before that.
As such, Michigan car accident attorneys have seen an influx of victims injured in auto crashes. In more severe cases, it’s the loved ones of those who have died in these accidents and who are unsure about who pays after an accident.
With such an increase in accidents and fatalities, you may be curious about which are the most accident-prone vehicles on the road? And, is yours one of them?
What Makes a Car Accident-Prone?
There are several factors that can make a vehicle especially accident-prone. Sometimes there are manufacturer defects that contribute to accident-prone vehicles. Then there are design flaws including poor visibility and limited driver-assistance features.
In addition, many models receive low crash safety ratings from organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Although it should be noted that every year, there are models that receive positive safety ratings in controlled crash tests whose real-world fatal accident rates suggest a different reality.
Drivers must also be considered. Some cars attract certain demographics that tend to be less respectful of the rules of the road. For example, younger and more aggressive drivers are drawn to fast sports cars. Or vehicles with a high horsepower-to-weight ratio invite drivers to put the metal to the pedal.
The Top 6 Most Accident-Prone Vehicles
As one might expect, compact and subcompact cars have the highest rate of fatal accidents by size while full-size models have the lowest fatality rates by size.
To identify the most dangerous vehicles on U.S. roads today, iSeeCars.com analyzed fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of model year 2018-2022 cars with crashes that resulted in at least one occupant fatality. They are as follows:
-
Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue is a peppy little SUV that appears pretty harmless. As a higher-profile SUV that has an increased chance of rolling over, however, it was involved in 13.9 fatal accidents per billion vehicle miles (bmv) in 2024. That’s 4.9 times the average – proving it’s not as harmless as it appears.
-
Chevrolet Corvette
The iconic Chevy Corvette has always been a fixture on roads and highways in the United States. It’s a gorgeous car that stays low to the ground with sleek lines and the need for speed. As such, it tallied 13.6 fatal accidents per bvm; 4.8 times the average.
-
Mitsubishi Mirage
There’s nothing assuming about the Mitsubishi Mirage. In fact, it’s a small car (even for a compact) that seems a better fit for running around town and running errands. Perhaps because of its small size, it reported a whopping 13.6 fatal accidents per bvm in 2024 – the same as the speedy Corvette.
-
Porsche 911
With the Porsche 911, some models can achieve 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds, such as the 911 Turbo S. It’s not surprising that such a high-performance sports car was involved in 13.2 fatal accidents per bvm and at 4.6 times the average.
-
Honda CR-V Hybrid
The Honda CR-V Hybrid seems an unlikely contender in this race to the bottom. There’s nothing terribly sporty about it and with it being a hybrid, it probably isn’t attracting the more aggressive drivers out there. Even so, it came in with the same fatality rate as the Porsche 911.
-
Tesla Model Y
There’s a considerable jump between the #5 Honda CR-V Hybrid and the the Tesla Model Y that comes in at #6. The only fully electric car on our small list here, it was involved in 10.6 fatal accidents per bvm in 2024. That’s 3.7 times the average. While less than the previous five, this is still nothing to sneeze at.
