KAJY: Good morning, Angie. Thank you so much for having me today. I really appreciate it.
STARR: I appreciate what you do for my folks in Detroit, because I just get a vibration that you care. Please explain what makes your law firm different.
KAJY: So we specialize in car accident cases. Providing good service to my clients is crucial. And in my opinion, if you’re a lawyer handling lots of different types of cases, you’re not an expert in any single field. So, straight out of law school, I wanted to become an expert in car accidents and I wanted to do right for my clients. So I started Kajy Law right there and then.
STARR: I’ve seen your sign and it’s huge. You’ve got to win to get that!
KAJY: Thankfully, it’s been really good for us. I think people are happy with our services, and they come back. And they refer their friends and family. That’s the best part of what I do – getting referrals from friends and family.
STARR: So, you gotta go up against the big boys and the insurance companies. Talk about that.
KAJY: Yeah. We’re a litigation firm, so we’re not scared to take things to trial. We file suit whenever we think that the insurance companies did something wrong. And we’ve been 90 plus percent successful in those cases. So, if someone has an insurance issue, we’re the guys to handle it.
STARR: If someone is interested in your service, do they need to bring a whole bunch of money up front? How does all of that work?

KAJY: Absolutely not, Angie. I’ve never personally taken $1 from any of my clients. I fund all the costs and everything that needs to happen for the case. Even if we go to trial, sometimes I spend 20, maybe 30 grand on that trial and put all the costs up myself. And if we recover, we’re successful, that’s when we earn a fee. So nothing ever comes out of the client’s pocket.
STARR: Wow. So, say you’re in an accident and you’re in the hospital; the accident just occurred. When should they call you?
When to Call Kajy Law After a Michigan Car Accident
KAJY: Yeah, so it’s best to call right away. There are a lot of things that we have to do right at the onset. For example, if someone’s injured in a car accident and they present themselves to the hospital, that hospital will usually charge their health insurance for that bill, which is not what’s supposed to happen. In Michigan, your auto insurance is supposed to pay for your hospital bill and any medical treatment that you get afterwards. So we step in and help them make a claim and get them set up with a good adjuster who will pay their bills. Then we just make sure that everything’s paid. And we’ll make sure the hospital knows to bill the auto insurance and not the health insurance because that can lead to some tricky issues down the road.
STARR: I love the fact that you fight and aren’t scared to go to court. Can you tell us about a case you’re proud of where you had an insurance company that really tried you but weren’t successful?

KAJY: Yeah, we had a case this year. The client with a bigger case call us because the insurance company offered him $300,000 to settle his claim. That sounded great, but his calling us was a very smart decision. I spoke to him personally and told him it was not a good deal and should reject the offer. Then I took the case. We filed suit against the at-fault driver and after a year and a half of litigation back and forth, we ended up settling for over a million dollars more than the first offer.
STARR: Wow! That’s a lot more!
Tactics Insurance Companies Use to Lessen Your Car Accident Compensation
KAJY: Yeah. Insurance companies will always try to save themselves money. So if they can get a claim settled for X amount before they hire a lawyer, they’ll definitely do that. That’s why I always recommend you call me and ask if it’s a good deal. I’ll tell you the truth whether you hire me or not. I’ve settled over 2,000 cases and I know what they should settle for. I also know which cases should be pushed to trial.
STARR: So insurance companies are in their conference rooms, trying to figure out how to get over on people?
KAJY: You have to remember that, at the end of the day, insurance is a business, right? And they want to make money and save themselves money. So insurance companies collect premiums and they try to pay out as little as they can. Hiring a skilled car accident attorney who know the bigger insurance companies and how to deal with them also know how to get money out of them. That’s us. We know what to do to make sure that we maximize our client’s cases.
What Happens if You Are Injured in a Rideshare Car Accident?
STARR: So what if you’re riding in an Uber and you get in an accident? Do handle cases like that?
KAJY: We do. And it’s handled similar to a regular accident case. Usually in Michigan, when you get into a car accident, there are two types of claims. One is called a first party claim, where you’re going through your own insurance company to cover medical bills, lost wages, and stuff like that. The other claim is a claim against the at-fault driver. So if the Uber driver’s at-fault, we go against the Uber driver. If somebody else is at-fault, then we go against that person. So it’s very similar to a regular car accident case, and we do handle those cases.
STARR: You just have a passion inside of you for doing this and you said it came from just seeing the need and what’s needed because you said you felt like people were getting shortchanged.
KAJY: Actually, it was a mix of seeing the need and noticing how insurance companies handle claims. I recognized a good opportunity for me to take on these cases and get good money for my clients. And as I said earlier, we’re 90 plus percent successful when we file a lawsuit against. So if your insurance company denied your claim, you come to us, and we file a suit, we get paid on those 90 plus percent of the time.

STARR: On top of that, it seems that it’s important for you to communicate with the clients.
KAJY: That’s the biggest thing. In my list of core values, the first one is care. And the second one is communication. When people are involved in a car accident, they need to be communicated with. It’s not an easy thing to go through and they need to know what the next steps will be. That’s why I like to communicate at least once per week in the first couple months. When we get six or seven months out and things are going well, we’ll still talk maybe every few weeks.
